December: Let's do this thing!

Kelly,

Well, I have to read 2 books this month, so I'm a little worried, but I also have the last 10 days of the month off, so I'm going to keep positive and tell myself that I can do this!

The first book I'm tackling is Cutting for Stone, a novel that has a lot of fans out there. Every single solitary person I know that has read it, and I'm not exaggerating that, has sung its praises. I'm a few chapters in and I think I will like it. It's seems like a sweeping generational story of two brothers, both doctors. One brother is the narrator, and it starts with him describing the lives of his mother, a nun! and nurse at a hospital in Africa. The father (although there seems like the potential for that to be a contested title) is a surgeon and friend, Dr Stone.

Nuns, doctors, twins, globe hopping, multiple cultures, Abbis Ababa? I'm in!

I'm not sure what I'll do after that one. I have one novel left, The Book of Night Women and two books of non-fiction, The Best and the Brightest and Embracing Defeat. I'm *hoping* to tackle The Best and The Brightest, since it's a book I've wanted to read for years. We'll see how it goes.

How are things looking for you? Not like this has been a busy year or anything. Heh.

  1. Well, I have *3* books left, which is making me a little nervous. The biggest is At Home. I've started it and I enjoy it so far, so I just need to buckle down and keep reading. Bike-riding time has proven to also be good book-reading time.

My last two are Nox, which you have assured me will be quick and Wonder Woman which, I must confess, has a lot of pictures (although the text looks surprisingly dense).

The good news is that I have the last two weeks of the month off. Yay! The bad news? We're moving this week. Also... holidays aren't busy times, right? Oof.

Aaaand... I also need to review the last 3 books that I have read! Ack! Who needs sleep?

Have you started thinking about your 2013 books yet? :)

  2. Nox! You can knock that out in a quick hour! You can do it!

I have been starting to think about my 2013 books (making this list of 14 books is seriously one of my favorite things to do all year). At this point, I probably won't put quite so many non-fiction books on and I definitely need to pay more attention to page length. It felt daunting to have so many LONG books. Some months I just need things I can breeze through! But at the same time, I'm so happy that I read some of the longer books on my list!

I'm making good progress on Cutting for Stone, so I feel confident I can finish this year's challenge.
